A suspected drunk driver hit a group of bicyclists in Culver City, causing 11 of them to go to the hospital. The injuries of the victims included broken legs, a shattered jaw and a separated shoulder. One victim ended up in critical condition.
According to a witness, the scene was nothing short of horrific: “It was as simple as a bowling ball knocking out a few pins,” Fred Armstead told KABC-TV Los Angeles. “There was no attempt to stop. So she just went one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, and just kept going.”
The driver, Christine Dahab, was charged with misdemeanor drunk driving. She claims, however, that she ran into the cyclists because she was distracted by her cell phone.
What to Do When You Have an Accident With a Motorist
Whether they are rushing to work in the Financial District on a weekday morning, or taking a leisurely ride on a scenic street on a Sunday afternoon, San Francisco cyclists love to ride around the City and the San Francisco Bay Area. As enjoyable as cycling is, San Franciscans need to be aware of the dangers of cycling and take whatever precautions are reasonable. Proper safety equipment is a must. So, how can a cyclist be prepared if a collision does occur? And what should you do?
If you’ve been in a cycling accident, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition suggests that you do the following in order to protect your rights:
Contact the police: You should call the police and file a police report as soon as possible. Be sure to give the police the driver’s information, such as the driver’s license plate number and insurance information
Keep the evidence: Don’t get your bike fixed until after your case has been resolved. You should also keep the clothes that you wore on the day of the accident and take photographs of the scene, paying close attention to any marks left on the pavement such as skids or gouges.
Get medical treatment: By going to the doctor, you will have documentation of your injuries, which can help you get a fair settlement later
