San Francisco just took bike safety to new heights, literally. The city’s Municipal Transportation Agency just debuted it’s first ever raised bike path, in an attempt to provide a few blocks of protection in the heart of downtown.
The lane stretches along Market Street, from Gough to 12th, and is just the first of many paths scheduled for construction during the next year. A woman was struck and killed in St. Helena this past week, after her bicycle ran into the side of a box truck on Main Street. The woman was vacationing with her husband who she had just recently married.
She entered Main Street from a private driveway, turning left out of the driveway, striking the passenger side of a box truck at a right angle, hitting midway between the cab and back axle.

If you’ve read my posts about bicycle accidents before, checked out my blog, or even browsed my website, you know that one of my greatest goals is to reduce injuries and fatalities due to bicycle collisions, through making persons and companies and public entities accountable when they needlessly endanger bicycle riders, and also through advising about safer bicycle riding. The statistics are shocking: 100 or more people per year die from bicycle collisions in California alone. This number is deplorable and should be drastically reduced.

As my clients know, I’m not just a bicycle advocate, and not just a pedestrian advocate, I am a safety advocate. And when we’re navigating the busy (and sometimesdangerous) streets of San Francisco, safety is much more important than whether we are walking, pedaling, or driving. I’m of the opinion that everyone needs to do their part to avoid collisions, avoid personal injuries, and generally keep one another safe and secure.
