I am proud to live in a city where our city and county hospital has received a prestigious brain trauma certification in the treatment for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). San Francisco General Hospital deserves the honor to be the first trauma treatment center in San Francisco county, indeed in the country, to receive this certification because of their leading edge technology, medical skills, neuro-monitoring capabilities, imaging technologies and research.
Dr. Geoff Manley, San Francisco General’s Chief of Neurosurgery, Dr. Geoffrey Manley stated, “I truly believe this new certification effort by The Joint Commission can lead to improved care for traumatic brain-injured patients across the United States.”
The hospital’s specialists see more than 1,200 patients with traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries and perform nearly 300 neurosurgical operations a year.
On March 31, 2011 San Francisco Giant fan, Bryan Stow suffered severe brain trauma when he was assaulted at the season opener against the Dodgers in Los Angeles. Doctors in Los Angeles treated Stow for seven weeks until his condition improved enough to allow for his transfer to San Francisco General while still in a state of comatose. Because of the top notch care under Dr. Manley’s head neurotrauma team, San Francisco General Hospital was able to help Stow heal to a point where six months later, he is able to communicate through facial expressions and short sentences, and enjoy a quiet moment with sun on his face for the first time.
